No use in crying over spilled milk

Is there really no use in crying over spilled milk? My basset hound knocked a small cup of milk from the table. Big mess, as you can see. Even the cat wanted to get in on the mess. Weep no more! Green cleaning took care of this mess super fast.

Spilled milk

All purpose cleaner #1

  • 3 tbsp. white vinegar
  • 1⁄2 tsp. washing soda
  • 1⁄2 tsp. vegetable oil based liquid soap
  • 2 cups hot water

Mix ingredients in spray bottle or bucket. Apply and wipe clean.

The recipe is from the "green cleaning" curriculum. This curriculum is so great; it's full of great tested recipes and tips! It was created by Sharon Gibson and Pam Turner at the University of Georgia; with permission.

Until next time ...

Grody to the max

I was talking to my 12-year old daughter Jenkins and described something as "grody to the max." She replied, "what does that mean?"

Dear readers, here is an example of something that is grody to the max: The top of my refrigerator! Out of sight, out of mind. It had become so dusty and grimy and a dumping ground for random stuff.

How did this junk get here, anyhow?!

What is the best way to stay on top of the out-of-sight, out of mind chores? First, identify them. Then, rotate them into the cleaning schedule.

During the detox process

I invite you to check the top of your fridge for dust bunnies and other grime.
Until next week!

Recipe for super awesome fast silver cleaning!

Got some tarnished silver? Here is an AMAZING treatment.
  • Line small pan with aluminum foil
  • Place silver on aluminum foil
  • Mix together 1/4 c. baking soda, dash of salt, and enough boiling water to cover silver
  • Pour water mixture over silver and watch the magic!
How does it work? Basically, the aluminum is being corroded. According to J.L. Anderson, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Georgia, the tarnished silver accepts electrons from the aluminum, causing the aluminum to dissolve while the tarnish is turned back to metallic silver.

I use this cleaning technique on all of my silver jewelry. I don't have a lot of jewelry, so the stuff I have gets worn daily.

My favorite sterling silver bracelets

Did you know that baking soda by itself also removes tarnish? The pieces pictured here are hard to clean using baking soda. There are so many nooks and crannies, especially on the bead bracelet. So, I drop them into the water, foil, salt and soda treatment and voila! PERFECTION.

Detail showing that even the beaded bracelet chain is clean

If you try this technique, please send me a before/after picture.

Until next time...

My aqua house

I recently took a trip to celebrate my 15 year wedding anniversary (August, 2014). My husband Jason and I took a trip to the US and British Virgin Islands aboard an Island Packet sailboat (40' long with 13'2" beam).

Jason awaiting to set sail

The boat was sailed by my brother Andy and sister-in-law Christie. It was just the four of us on board for eight days. We spent most of our time sailing, snorkeling, and hiking.

Christie, me, and Jason in the surf. Aqua home in background.

The sailboat turned out to be a tidy little home for four people. We cooked all of our meals on board. The big challenge was conserving water. This is a partial view of the cabin. The boat had all of the comforts of a home on land, just smaller. The organizational philosophy was "a place for everything and everything in it's place."

The best part was ... everything! Live on a boat for 8 days! What an adventure!

Invasion of the ants!

Just this week my home was INVADED by ants. It started on Wednesday night. We came home from work and saw trails of ants in the kitchen. We went outside and found the trail. The ants had crawled up the side of the house and onto the roof, where they proceeded into the house via some molecular-sized entry point.

My husband Jason stated the ants had found a doorway and created a golden highway. There were so many ants it was like science fiction.

And the ants go marching down...

Our house was build by an architect and is full of interesting details. For example, we have cork ceilings throughout the house. The ants were running along the the space between the cork ceiling and the wall. This was the ant main entry point... so I sealed it up with caulk.

Ant bait

Outside, we did some more caulk sealing. Basically, I was trying to close the door on the little pests. I also removed the mulch from around the foundation to make the habitat less hospitable. We purchased ant baits (interior and exterior), at the recommendation of Brad Kard, Ph.D. (structural/urban entomology).

Woke up this morning and the ants are gone; few stragglers remain.

Until next time!

One easy trick to save $

Maintain the heating, ventilation, and ir conditioning (HVAC) system on your home with this one little trick: Keep it clean (this is one of our 7 principles of healthy housing).

Since about half of our energy dollars go to heating/cooling, it makes sense to do everything we can to help our equipment be more efficient. Debris can restrict airflow to the unit.

Before: Air handling equipment covered in leaves

After: Much tidier

This is something that I can do myself. It took me all of 3 minutes, and can easily be added to my Saturday chore list.

Last second stuff

All:

In the event of an emergency, we suggest that you have list of a few things to grab at the very last second. For me, it's my phone and my purse. I am adding a NEW item to the list: My daughter's hearing aids!

This is an example of one of those items that cannot go into my disaster kit, which is stored in my shelter. If we are expecting weather, I'll have my purse, phone, and her hearing aids with me so I can be ready, if necessary.

What are your last-minute items?!
