If you could see my office right now! It looks like I have taken up residence. I am getting ready for an in-service, so stuff is stacked EVERYWHERE. After the in-service, I am going to SPRING clean my office. I challenge you to do the same.

Paper
Let's start with paper. We can look at the paper in our offices and recycle what we can. I am going to start with my files. This does not have to take a lot of time. In fact, I am going to set a timer. Looking forward to cleaning with you!

Step by step...
All:
I am reading a really great book called "The Happiness Project," by Gretchen Rubin. Something I read inspired me to tackle the disaster preparedness work we're doing in a slightly different way.
As you know, we're trying to get people to build a disaster kit. We're encouraging people to look around their homes, gather stuff they already have, and put it in their kits.
I'd like 100% of OHCE members to participate!
So, I am breaking the this into steps.

- Please have clients fill out the "Build a Kit on Budget Challenge." The participants sign the pledge on the spot. You cut the bottom tab off and send it to me. The client takes the top part (it has the list of materials to assemble).

100 years of Extension!
Now that we're celebrating 100 years of Extension, let's turn our attention to... outhouses! In 1914, every home did not feature an indoor toilet.
The book titled, "Cooperative Extension Work in Agriculture and Home Economics, 1918" was published by the US Department of Agriculture. This book states that in 1928, a total of 15,087 sanitary closets or outhouses were installed in homes due to Extension. Just think of the impact that this had in the lives of these families.
Does anyone have an outhouse picture? Please send it and I will feature it on the blog.

Build a kit on a budget
All:
Happy March! In like a lion... out like a tornado? Let's get ready for storm season.
I have worked with many of you on the "Build a Kit on a Budget." Here is a video that explains exactly what to do.
Ultimately, I am looking for 80 percent of OHCE membership across Oklahoma to create disaster kits. That's 3,200 disaster kits. PLEASE help us get to this level of participation!
I am counting the number of kits made by the number of completed certificates that I receive.

What's that smell? Natural gas!
All:
My neighbor is an older adult and needs assistance. There is a decorative gas lamp in her front yard. A long time ago, I smelled gas coming from the lamp. I called Oklahoma Natural Gas, and a representative was sent to fix the problem at the lamp.
Fast forward a few months … I smelled gas again. I called Oklahoma Natural Gas and the representative came and turned the gas line off at the house.
Fast forward again to yesterday. I smelled gas again! I called Oklahoma Natural Gas and alerted the caregivers. The problem was fixed.
You are probably wondering … why does the problem keep happening? I am going to talk to my neighbor's son, get to the bottom of the matter, and develop a permeant solution.
At any rate, the moral of the story is as follows. ALWAYS report a gas leak. Why? Reduce risk of fire and/or explosion.
Healthy Homes Principle that applies to this situation: Keep it safe

Something new at the Peek house!
Something new at the Peek house!
My family has talked about getting a storm shelter for almost 2 years. We have talked extensively about our house and our needs. Keep in mind that this might not be the best solution for everyone.
Happy Valentine's Day: In-ground shelter installed in the garage!
My husband, girls, and I acted out our first tornado drill last night. I climbed in the shelter with everyone and lasted all of 20 seconds. I could not sit there; the tight feeling was overwhelming. See how happy my girls are in the picture? They are thrilled.
Here is what I am going to do to cope with it: PRACTICE. I am going to get into the shelter each weekend, building up to a point where I can tolerate the sensation.
I'll keep you posted …
